Description
The new ZWO ASI 585MC (color) camera, an upgrade from the ZWO ASI 485MC
The ZWO ASI585MC uses the latest SONY IMX585 CMOS sensor with STARVIS 2 technology, it is an astronomical OSC camera with a large full well capability.
As one of ZWO’s newest OSC (“One Shot Color”) planetary cameras, this camera has a large sensor size of 1/1.2″, a high resolution of 3840*2160 and a surprisingly amazing feature of ZERO AMP GLOW! The pixel size is 2.9um*2.9um. In 12-bit mode, this camera produces 46.9 FPS with super low readout noise!
Specifications of the ASI 585 MC
The latest Sony IMX585 CMOS sensor
At 2.9um, the ASI585MC has the same pixel size as the ASI462MC, but the resolution is 4 times that of the ASI462MC, which totals 8.29 megapixels.
The sensor size is 11.13 mm * 6.26 mm and the diagonal length is 12.84 mm.
The 1/12″ large sensor size makes this camera great for solar and lunar imaging.
It can also be used as an all-sky camera or live camera to observe and monitor clouds, rain, meteors and other weather conditions.
STARVIS 2
The ASI585MC uses the latest SONY IMX585 sensor with STARVIS 2 technology.
With no amp glow, less dark current noise and 3 times greater full source capacity, this camera is also considered an upgrade from the ASI485MC.
The camera is also more sensitive to red, green and near infrared (NIR) lights compared to the ASI485MC, especially in the wavelength range of >850 nm, the light sensitivity is 1.5 times greater than that of the ASI485MC.
Upgraded model
The ASI585MC is an improved camera for the ASI485MC. Compared to the ASI485MC, it has the features of greater full well capacity and no more ampglow.
In the image below, we compare the ASI585MC with the ASI485MC.
Large Full Well depth of the ZWO ASI585MC
Thanks to the backlit sensor structure and advanced pixel technology, the camera has very low readout noise and great full well depth.
Especially in low light, the camera performs excellently and captures very clear images of celestial bodies.
Camera Curve of the ZWO ASI585MC
Low readout noise, high dynamic range
The camera has a built-in HCG mode, which can effectively reduce readout noise at high gain and allows the camera to maintain the same high dynamic range as at low gain.
When the gain is 252, the HCG mode is automatically enabled and the dynamic range reaches a level close to 12 bits.
The readout noise is as low as 1.5e.
Quantum Efficiency of the ZWO ASI585MC
After our calculation, the quantum efficiency of the ASI585MC is 91%.
USB 3.0 & 256MB DDR3 memory
It features a USB 3.0 transmission interface and a built-in 256 MB DDR3 cache to ensure stable and secure data transfer.
With a long exposure, frame dropout is effectively avoided and the annealing effect caused by a low read rate is significantly reduced.
No more Amp Glow!
The ASI585MC no longer exhibits amp glow no matter how long the exposure and how high the gain value is.
Because it is implemented directly at the hardware level, no software control is required.
