About Lunt Solar systems
Lunt Solar Systems is a manufacturing and sales facility in Tucson, Arizona that designs, manufactures, assembles and tests solar telescopes and solar filters. Because of our location here in Tucson, we have the opportunity to witness some amazing astronomical phenomena. Tucson has about 300 clear days a year. Since we are in the solar telescope market, we think it is important that we have access to this clear sky as often as possible.
We personally test every telescope and filter that comes with Lunt Solar. We do this to maintain the best possible quality control. This removes any doubts about what problems may be present and helps us address the best solutions for each problem. Be it alignment, off band, astigmatism, pinching, pin holes, streaking, etc – none of these issues are overlooked.
We believe that if the customer receives the product in the same condition that it left the factory, they will be very satisfied. As we all know, there are times when problems arise due to the shipping glove. That is why we treat all our products with the care and efficiency that our customers demand.
Quality and safety
The public often asks if it is safe to look through a Lunt Solar product. We have been testing these products for nearly 20 years. Safety is our number one priority in this hobby. Lunt takes safety very seriously and any filter or scope testing should be done by a person with full understanding of the product from design to function and safety. The person testing products must have the experience necessary to determine whether a unit actually meets or fails to meet the quality control criteria.
NO OTHER ASTRONOMIC PRODUCT REQUIRES A HIGHER LEVEL OF QUALITY THAN A SUNNY INSTRUMENT.
Lunt purchases raw glass material from a company on the east coast. We grind, mill, chamfer and polish all the glass needed for the etalon and filter systems in-house. Most coatings are outsourced to a coating facility that maintains a coating chamber specific to our requirements. Our coating factory has the required power to produce AR coatings with less than 0.1% R, and usually in the range of 0.06% R. They also keep the high reflexivity coatings better than ± 1%. The ability to so precisely control the coating processes has allowed us to make precise adjustments to the coating formulas, which have been proven to improve contrast by reducing background noise.
Lunt buys mechanical parts from many locations. We have a local, family-run CNC machine shop in our industrial complex that manufactures many of the unique parts specific to retrofitting existing scopes for solar-powered use. Adapter plates, prototype parts and some mechanical parts are also made in-house.
